PS Pride 2018 : Youth Power for Change
By Ron deHarte

Greater Palm Springs Pride celebrating our diversity, advancing equality, and working for social justice for all.

Inspired by and in support of youth-led movement-building efforts that are awakening critical conversations for social change, Greater Palm Springs Pride kicks off the 2018 Pride season under the theme of Youth Power for Change and Youth of Coachella Valley have collectively been named Grand Marshals of the 2018 Pride Parade.

This year’s event is dedicated to our nation’s youth and all they’re doing to make our world a safer, more respectful place. It’s estimated that millennials make up almost a third of the American electorate, and come Nov. 6 of this year, millions of newly minted 18-year-olds will be eligible to make a difference at the ballot box.”

It’s inspiring to see the number of teens and tweens who are standing up and saying “enough!” to intolerance, discrimination, and gun violence. After all, Pride is, and always has been, a show of resistance. Resistance to discrimination, resistance to hatred. Resistance to fear, to violence. What started as a rebellion has become a global movement nearly 50 years later. As we honor those who have courageously fought for equality and are no longer with us, we welcome the support and strength of the next generations.

With the support of the City of Palm Springs, some of the highlights of this year’s event include a new Downtown Stage on Museum Way; more than 100 performances throughout the weekend; 150 back-to-back exhibitors booths; and plenty of outdoor food and beverage booths, featuring products from Festival supporters Budweiser, Effen, DeKuyper, Sauza, and Jim Beam.

By going to the Parade and the Festival you are helping to raise awareness and visibility of the LGBTQ community. And if it’s been a while since you’ve had an HIV test, Get Tested Coachella Valley will be on hand to make sure you know your status.

Pride is for everyone. So, whether you’re a member of the LGBT community, a supportive ally, or someone who’s questioning where you fit into the spectrum, you are part of our diverse and vibrant community, and your place is here with us.

Happy Pride, everyone!
