{"id":1486,"date":"2019-05-06T17:40:58","date_gmt":"2019-05-06T17:40:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thestandardps.com\/?p=1486"},"modified":"2019-05-06T17:43:43","modified_gmt":"2019-05-06T17:43:43","slug":"harvey-milk-diversity-breakfast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thestandardps.com\/?p=1486","title":{"rendered":"Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This year\nthe breakfast is commemorating the 50<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary of the Stonewall\nUprising which is known as the birth of the&nbsp;modern&nbsp;LGBT movement, and the Assassination of Harvey Milk,\nthe first openly gay elected official in California, and his legacy of\ngroundbreaking inspiration in the struggle to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual\nand transgender equality.&nbsp; The\nevent is designed to strengthen coalitions among the many diverse community\norganizations that work toward equality in the Coachella Valley and benefit Coachella Valley youth through Gay-Straight\nAlliance clubs and LGBT youth related programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lesbian\nActivists Lucy DeBardelaben and Gail Christian will be this year\u2019s recipients\nof the Harvey B. Milk Leadership Award at the 8th Annual Coachella Valley\nHarvey Milk Diversity Breakfast on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at the Palm Springs\nConvention Center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since\narriving in Palm Springs in 2003, Lucy and Gail have seen Palm Springs as a\nplace for African-American LBGTQ people to live, thrive and participate in a\nsocial justice movement that saw itself within the context of a the struggle\nfor civil rights. To connect with women of color within the LGBTQ community\nthey began by having an annual backyard party during the Dinah Shore Weekend\ncalled \u2018Dinah in Color\u2019. This event was the beginning of creating a measurable\nAfrican-American Lesbian presence in the Coachella Valley of Lesbians who would\ngo on to becoming active members in all aspects of the LGBTQ community.&nbsp;By\n2012 they had became known Lucy and Gail, producers of events of interest to\nwomen; especially their Palm Springs Women in Jazz Festival. The events became\nmore integrated and today draw lesbians of all colors to events and activities\nwhere it is common to see people of other races and cultures.&nbsp; The focus\nis now on helping to shape a LBGTQ community where social justice and issues of\nequality are discussed and share the same importance as issues of gender and\nsexuality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keynoting\nthe Breakfast will be State Controller Betty Yee. Ms. Yee has more than 35\nyears of experience in public service, specializing in state and local finance\nand tax policy. Previously she served as Chief Deputy Director for Budget with\nthe California Department of Finance where she led the development of the\nGovernor\u2019s Budget, negotiations with the Legislature and key budget\nstakeholders, and fiscal analyses of legislation.&nbsp; Prior to this, she served in senior staff positions for\nseveral fiscal and policy committees in both houses of the California State\nLegislature.&nbsp; She also cofounded\nthe Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project, which exposes California high\nschool youth to the public service, public policy, and political arenas. Ms.\nYee is dedicated to creating incentives to increase the number of affordable\nhousing units, spur economic development, support pollution-control\ninnovations, and strengthen health&nbsp;and educational facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Registration\nfor the event begins at 8:45 am, Program &amp; Breakfast from 9:30 to 11 am.\nFor tickets or more information go to www.harveymilk.us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SIDEBAR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Norwegian Airlines adds the late gay San\nFrancisco supervisor Harvey Milk to its Tail Fin Heroes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milk, the\nfirst out gay person to win elective office in both San Francisco and\nCalifornia, only to be assassinated 11 months into his term on the morning of\nNovember 27, 1978, is the eighth American to be honored by the international\ncarrier on one of its aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His image\nwill be featured on a newly built Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner that flew from\nSeattle Monday for London to receive its final detailing and installation. The\naircraft, the 168th in the Norwegian fleet to feature a tail fin hero, will be\nbased out of London but is expected to fly various routes to the U.S. including\nto New York City&#8217;s JFK airport and to San Francisco International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a\nstatement Norwegian founder and CEO Bj\u00f8rn Kjos said the company sees the honor\nas paying tribute to Milk&#8217;s &#8220;bravery and courage&#8221; in fighting for\nequal rights &#8220;that will span the globe for years to come, reinforcing our\njoint commitment to making the world a smaller, friendlier and more inclusive\nplace.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Like\nours, Harvey Milk&#8217;s mission was reflective of a pioneering spirit,&#8221; stated\nKjos. &#8220;He demonstrated a tireless hunger to look past the differences of\npeople and instead focus on bringing them together for the greater good, which\nwe know resonates with many Americans.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milk is the\nthird male LGBT icon, and first American out man, to be featured on a Norwegian\nairplane. The visage of the late Queen front man Freddie Mercury and the late\nauthor Oscar Wilde have both graced the tail fin of one of the airline&#8217;s\ncrafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked\nif its inaugural flight into the Bay Area could be timed to the state&#8217;s Harvey\nMilk Day holiday this May 22, which is Milk&#8217;s birthday, Norwegian spokesman\nAnders Lindstr\u00f6m didn&#8217;t rule it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Norwegian marketing\ndirector Ben Kaufman had recommended that the company add Milk to its list of\ntail fin heroes. The New Jersey native is a gay man, as is Lindstr\u00f6m, who is\nfrom Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are\nproud to partner with Norwegian, having Uncle Harvey join the airline&#8217;s\nforward- thinking Tail Fin Hero program that already includes change makers\nlike Sojourner Truth and Oscar Wilde,&#8221; stated Stuart Milk in the airline&#8217;s\nrelease. &#8220;This is such a unique way to educate and celebrate those that\nhave come before us, allowing for their legacies to live on.
