{"id":1442,"date":"2019-02-03T01:37:40","date_gmt":"2019-02-03T01:37:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thestandardps.com\/?p=1442"},"modified":"2019-02-03T01:37:43","modified_gmt":"2019-02-03T01:37:43","slug":"clexacon-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thestandardps.com\/?p=1442","title":{"rendered":"ClexaCon 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>ClexaCon\n2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pushing\nThe Envelope Forward For LGBTQ+ Women\u2019s Visibility in Entertainment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By Mona Elyafi<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Putting A Laser Focus On Education To Empower LGBTQ+&nbsp;Women To\nCreate The Stories They Want To See <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standing tall and strong as the largest\nconvention for LGBTQ+ women and allies, ClexaCon continues to affirm its\nunwavering commitment to focus on the power of queer women to create big and\nlasting change in front and behind the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Returning to Las Vegas\u2019 famed Tropicana Hotel April 11<sup>th<\/sup>\nthrough April 15<sup>th<\/sup>, 2019, for its third consecutive year, the one-of-a-kind event will once again bring\ntogether&nbsp;actresses, directors, producers, writers, comic book\nillustrators, visual artists, academics, journalists and fans from over 40 countries\nand all 50 U.S. states to celebrate the best of LGBTQ+ TV and film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans will have a chance to attend a series of\npanels on a variety of topics, workshops, charity events, parties, a red-carpet\nsoiree as well as a three-day film festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bringing their \u201cA\u201d game, Ashley\nArnold and&nbsp;Danielle Jablonski&nbsp;&#8211; the\nmasterminds behind the hugely popular convention &#8211; are not just shaking things\nup this year, they are changing the game too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The duo is decidedly cranking up the volume on ClexaCon\u2019s\nmission to push forth its enduring message of diversity,\nequality and inclusion of LGBTQ+ women in entertainment at various levels of\nthe industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Putting an extra laser-focus this April on the\nimportance of education and academics, ClexaCon strives to empower and inspire\nmore LGBTQ+ women to get involved in content creation while simultaneously\nembolden allies to improve representation for LGBTQ+ characters in their\ncreative work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Impressively drawing some 4,000+ attendees from\nover 40 countries last year, ClexaCon is on track for another impressive year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we keep witnessing the proliferation of the\n#RepresentationMatters hashtag across social media platforms, the message is\nclear: we\u2019re in desperate need of more diverse\nvoices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why the Con continues to provide educational\nresources for the community to aid in the push for better representation. Its\ngoal is to teach and motivate more LGBTQ+&nbsp;women to participate in creating\nthe stories that actually reflect America\u2019s evolving cultural landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LGBTQ representation on television in 2018 hit a record high\nthis year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glaad.org\/whereweareontv18\">GLAAD\u2019s annual TV diversity report<\/a>.\nSadly, the same can\u2019t be said about its Hollywood counterpart. The GLAAD report\nfound that filmmakers and producers miserably failed to include LGBTQ+\ncharacters in their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile we\u2019ve made considerable strides in moving\nthe needle culturally, there\u2019s still not enough queer women creating content,\u201d\nsay Danielle Jablonski, \u201cwe need to counter the roadblocks Hollywood continues\nto put in front of us and provide more avenues to educate and teach the next\ngeneration of LGBTQ+ women about how to tell their stories and get their\ncontent out to the world\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe all want to see our stories told,\u201d added\nAshley Arnold, \u201cthe success of shows like Pose, Supergirl, Black Lightning,\nAdventure Time, Vida and One Day At A Time \u2013 all\nfeaturing inclusive storylines &#8211; denotes a clear audience demand and pressing\ninterest for new and diverse story angles.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end, ClexaCon is proud to be an active community\ncollaborator teaming up with some of the top industry institutions and LGBTQ+\nplayers in Arts &amp; Entertainment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SAG-AFTRA, YouTube Space L.A., Dash Production, Tello Films,\nOutfest and UNLV, are all on track with ClexaCon\u2019s mission to act as a catalyst\nfor change and work to advance professional achievement for LGBTQ+ women\nworking in all areas of film, Television, video, digital streaming platforms\nand other screen-based media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remaining at the forefront of the fight to put\nqueer female stories front and center, ClexaCon will kick-off the 5-day\nconvention on April 11 with a creative new concept: a one-day event with two\ndifferent Labs respectively filled with panels, workshops and networking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Creators Lab, in\npartnership with SAG-AFTRA, YouTube Space L.A., DASH Productions and Tello\nFilms, aims to inspire and empower the next generation of LGBTQ+ women, trans\nand non-binary creators. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Academic Lab, in\nassociation with The University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), will welcome queer\nacademic fans of queer content, Scholars\/educators of queer fandom to educate,\nenergize and invigorate the next generation of academics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also new this year is the exclusive collaboration with Outfest &#8211; one of the premier\nLGBTQ film festivals in the world &#8211; that will see the winner of Best Short Film\nat the ClexaCon 2019 Film Festival receive automatic inclusion in the Outfest\nFilm Festival in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again turning Sin City\u2019s Tropicana Hotel into the\nultimate entertainment hub,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ClexaCon 2019 will rally under one roof some of the\ncommunity\u2019s most prominent figures on television.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans will have a chance to rub elbows and connect with the\nlikes of Annie Briggs (Carmilla), Briana Venskus (Supergilr, The Walking Dead),\nCaity Lotz (Legends of Tomorrow), Chantal Thuy (Black Lightning), Crystal\nChappell (Venice), Dominique Provost-Chalkley (Wynonna Earp), Dot Marie Jones\n(Glee), Elise Bauman (Carmilla), Emily Andras (showrunner, Wynonna Earp, Lost\nGirl), Guinevere Turner (Go Fish, The L Word), Isabella Gomez (One Day at a Time),\nJes Macallan (Legends of Tomorrow), Katherine Barrell (Wynonna Earp), Katrina\nLaw (Arrow, Spartacus), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (Legends of Tomorrow), Mandahla\nRose (Forever Not Maybe), Nadia Bjorlin (Days of our Lives), Nafessa Williams\n(Black Lightning), Natasha Negovanlis (Carmilla), and Nicole Pacent (Anyone But\nme), to name a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strengthening its philanthropic values, this year\u2019s ClexaCon\nCocktails for Change and Fun Run will be benefiting <a href=\"http:\/\/visibilityfund.org\/\">The Visibility Fund \u2013 a non-profit\norganization dedicated to supporting LGBTQ content creators.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAdvocacy is a powerful lever for real impact,\u201d comments\nAshley Arnold, \u201cwe\u2019re honored to be giving back this year to a community\npartner like The Visibility Fund that shares our voice and stands for our\nmission.\u201d<br>\n<br>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ClexaCon might represent different things for everyone, yet\nthe one common thread for all remains its unique ability to bind us all\ntogether as one big family and organically impart a sense of solidarity and\nempowerment.
